The Pistoia zoological garden was founded in 1970 by Raffaello Galardini and represents one of the main zoological structures in Italy, extending for about 14 hectares (of which only 7 are currently open to the public)
It is home to around 400 animals including mammals, reptiles, birds, amphibians and invertebrates, including lemurs from Madagascar, lions, tigers, wolves, Asian elephants, giraffes, and brown bears. The zoo is a founding member of the Italian Union of Zoos and Aquariums (UIZA) and a member of EAZA.
